Everyone already has what it takes to write a picture book: the experience of having been a child. In this workshop, you will read and discuss various types of picture books, including books written in poetry and prose, books that are serious and books that are silly, and books that have been considered controversial. Then, using specific writing exercises, you will practice writing picture books of your own, all under the guidance of author and teacher Lesléa Newman. (Scroll down to register.)

Lesléa Newman is the author of more than 65 books for readers of all ages, including picture books in rhymed verse including CATS, CATS, CATS!, RUNAWAY DREIDEL!, MISS TUTU’S STAR, THE BOY WHO CRIED FABULOUS, JUST LIKE MAMA, and DADDY’S SONG. Her literary awards include poetry fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Massachusetts Artists Foundation; the Burning Bush Poetry Prize; and second place runner-up in the Solstice Literary Journal poetry competition.

From 2008 to 2010 she served as the poet laureate of Northampton, Massachusetts. Currently she is a faculty member of Spalding University’s low-residency MFA in Writing program.

Lesléa Newman will be in Austin celebrating her newest picture book, SPARKLE BOY, at the Texas Book Festival, and we're thrilled she's staying over to do this workshop. She's a wonderful teacher, and was Kwame Alexander's mentor for his award-winning novel THE CROSSOVER. Register below to learn Read It Again: The Art of Writing Picture Books with Lesléa Newman.

The fee for the workshop is $35 for members, $65 for non-members. (Non-members, if you would like to become a member prior to registering, go to SCBWI.org.) Members: Login to get the discounted rate.
