We humans need stories. We are hard-wired to interpret our own lives and experiences through the experiences of others, and a well-told story with a fully developed character provides us with a template for living. As writers, we know that creating that “fully developed character” is one of our greatest challenges. Psychology tells us that our views of life are formed by early “wounding”, and that the adult bases life decisions on revisiting the “wounded child”. Thus, as writers, it behooves us to understand the nature of our characters’ backstory wounds as they manifest in our characters’ story arcs. This workshop by author Janet Fox will explore the nature of backstory wounds and how to develop and use them to create fully rounded characters, using a range of exercises, templates, and take-aways.

Janet Fox is an author, mom, outdoor enthusiast, and former teacher. She’s been to the bottom of the ocean in a submersible and had a brief fling with rock stardom. Her novels are written for children and young adults but have won her fans of all ages. Her newest middle grade novel, CARRY ME HOME, is out from Simon & Schuster in August 2021. THE CHARMED CHILDREN OF ROOKSKILL CASTLE, which received a whole bunch of stars and the lovely Crystal Kite Award, is a gothic middle grade historical fairy tales set in Scotland and has a sequel, THE ARTIFACT HUNTERS. She lives in Bozeman, Montana. Find out more at
