Webinar: DIGITAL DUMMIES with Patrice Barton and Vanessa Roeder

Date(s) - 11/17/2020
7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

with Patrice Barton and Vanessa Roeder

Webinar: Nov 17, 7pm to 8:30pm Central time

In these days of Covid-19, many illustrators are left wondering how they will get their work seen by publishers. It has become more crucial than ever that illustrators have digital platforms for their work, whether it’s PDFs of their book dummies and graphic novel pitch packets, an online portfolio, or a digital marketing campaign of their work sent to art directors and agents on their list (a la “digital postcards”).

In PART I of our “Going Digital Workshop Series for Illustrators,” DIGITAL DUMMIES, Patrice Barton and Vanessa Roeder will go over how to put together a digital book dummy and submit it to publishers. They will address such questions as:

1. How do you prepare your work to digitally submit to agents, art directors and editors?

2. What programs do you use to put together your book dummies?

3. What are some of the things artists and author/illustrators should look out for when submitting their digital dummies?

The first hour will go over their process while the last half hour will be audience Q&A, so take notes and bring your questions!

Patrice Barton earned her BFA in Studio Art from UT in Austin TX, where she lives today with her husband and good dog, Archer. She is the award winning illustrator of over thirty picture and chapter books for children including The Invisible Boy by Trudy Ludwig (Knopf). Her picture book illustrations have twice been accepted into the Society of Illustrator’s Original Art Exhibit. She also received an “outstanding portfolio” certificate in the fifth grade from Sister Mary Pacella, which was the prime motivation for pursuing her dream job, illustrating children’s books.

Upcoming picture book: I See You See by Richard Jackson, Atheneum/Caitlyn Dlouhy Books, February 16, 2021

Vanessa Roeder is an award-winning author—illustrator, a painter, and a crafty mess-maker. A former muralist, she now spends her time making books for children.  Her work is created with layers of paper, acrylic paint, colored pencils, thread, trinkets, and a little bit of digital magic. In addition to making art, she loves teaching art, acting in plays, and speaking at schools, conferences, libraries, and bookstores any opportunity she gets. She lives in Austin, TX with her husband, three kids, and two hairy dogs who continually feed her ideas for the next story. You can find out more about Vanessa and her work at
