Picture Book Illustrators Writing Workshop

Author/Illustrators: This is a workshop for you!

Picture books tell stories in words and pictures, but each requires different skills. How can visual thinkers perfect words? How can wordsmiths create pictures? How can you put them together to tell YOUR story your way?

This full-day workshop will show you how.

andy-rash

The second in our picture book workshop series, and building upon the foundation of last year's Project Picture Book, this workshop is for those who are illustrators and budding authors AND those who are authors and budding illustrators.

We'll dig deeper into the craft, covering more sides of the author/illustrator's process, discussing not only illustration but writing as well. (Including narrative syncopation. What's that? Come and find out!)

Come prepared to learn and to participate in guided exercises.

COST: $60 for SCBWI members, $100 for non-members.

LUNCH: Registration includes a light lunch of mixed sandwiches. If you have special dietary needs, please bring your own lunch.

WHAT TO BRING

Please arrive with a manuscript ready to work with. It may be original or an adaptation of a well-known story such as The Three Little Pigs. Keep in mind if you select a story protected by copyright, you will still find educational value in the project, but you may create legal difficulties for yourself if you attempt to publish it. Your manuscript should be 300 words or fewer. If you have trouble writing a manuscript that short, be sure to remove as many adjectives as possible and absolutely every adverb. If your manuscript is still too long, take out all of the funny parts.

This manuscript will be the basis of our project. We will discuss picture book structure, breaking up a manuscript page by page for maximum impact, and creating thumbnails and sketches to produce a book dummy.

Please bring pencils and paper and pencil sharpeners and erasers. Bring your manuscript printed out with lots of space for notations, or in an editable document on a laptop.”
