Meet the award-winning author and illustrator of All Around Us, “the little indie book that could.” Xelena Gonzalez and Adriana Garcia will share their experiences going from journalism and muralism to picture book success.
Adriana will share some of her process in creating the images that earned her a Pura Belpre Illustrator Honor, as well as a sneak peek of pictures from their upcoming collaborations.
Xelena will discuss idea generation, rituals of writing, and the importance of building a bag of tricks that makes school visits and library programming enjoyable for all.
Adriana M Garcia, an award-winning artist, muralist, illustrator, scenic designer was born and raised in the west-side of San Antonio, Texas. Her debut picture book, All Around Us (written by Xelena González, Cinco Puntos Press), was awarded the prestigious 2018 Pura Belpré Honor for Illustration and the 2018 Tomás Rivera Book Award in the picture book category among other honors.
Garcia just finished mural entitled Changing the World to be installed on the campus of Northwest Vista College this fall. The mural project that Adriana completed for the San Pedro Creek improvements project for the city of San Antonio’s third centennial celebration entitled De Todos Caminos Somos Todos Uno was selected and recognized as part of the Americans for the Arts 2019 Public Art Network (PAN) Year in Review. Only 50 projects were selected out of 361. In collaboration with area nonprofit organizations Garcia has created many community murals including SOMArts in California, South West Workers Union, Bill Haus Arts, San Anto Cultural Arts Center, and Casa de la Cultura in Del Rio, Texas. Her murals honor ancestors, speak to access to education as well as give voice to mental health and immigration issues.
Adriana has exhibited her artwork both locally and nationally and has been invited to present at conferences, schools, and museums such as the National Association for Chicana and Chicano Studies (NACCS) and the McNay Art Museum. She has enjoyed working as an arts administrator and an art/design instructor for both youth and adult learners.
Xelena González is a storyteller, essayist, screenwriter, poet, and author of ALL AROUND US/POR TODO NUESTRO ALREDEDOR, winner of multiple accolades, including the Tomás Rivera Mexican American Children’s Book Award and an American Indian Youth Literature Honor Award. Her storytelling skills have been honed during her years as a children’s librarian in San Antonio and in Guangzhou, China. As a visiting author, she has introduced her method of “tai chi storytelling” to more than 50 schools and libraries around the country. An incoming member of Sandra Cisneros’ Macondo Writers Workshop, she is currently developing new work with support from the Artist Foundation of San Antonio and the National Association of Latino Arts and Culture. Her much-anticipated sophomore collaboration with San Antonio muralist Adriana Garcia is forthcoming in 2020 by Cinco Puntos Press.
