Date(s) - 11/12/2022
9:30 am - 11:00 am
Although we are meeting in person at BookPeople, we will also provide a Zoom link below approximately one hour before the meeting.
Why does a picture book author choose to write in first, second or third person? Join Author Susan Johnston Taylor to explore the pros and cons of these points of view and look at examples from fiction and nonfiction picture books from a diverse array of authors and author/illustrators. She will also include examples of picture books with multiple points of view and discuss the challenges of that approach. Time permitting, attendees will do a writing exercise in which they try revising a WIP in a different POV or use the excerpt provided.
Susan Johnston Taylor is a Writing Barn fellow, a Courage to Create visionary, and author of ANIMALS IN SURPRISING SHADES: POEMS ABOUT EARTH’S COLORFUL CREATURES (Gnome Road Publishing, 2023). Her poetry also appears in 10.10 Poetry Anthology: Celebrating 10 in 10 different ways. As a freelance writer for more than a decade, she’s written over a dozen titles for the educational market and published nonfiction articles in children’s magazines including FACES, Highlights for Children, and Scout Life. Her writing for grownups has appeared in The Atlantic, The Boston Globe, Entrepreneur, and Fast Company. She lives in Austin, Texas, with her husband and their two rescue dogs. Follow her on Twitter: @UrbanMuseWriter or on Instagram: @UrbanMuseWriter.
The meeting will start at 10am at BookPeople. However, if you can not make it in person due to distance or health, we will do our best to stream it live on Zoom. If you have questions, please put them in the Zoom chat. As usual, the Zoom meeting code will be provided below on morning of the event.
If you’re coming in person, please wear a mask. We also STRONGLY ENCOURAGE elbow bumps and social distancing. Also, if you feel sick, have been exposed to COVID or Monkeypox, or have tested positive in the past 5 days, please stay home and participate on Zoom. While lower numbers have allowed us to be in person, COVID is no where near gone. Please do everything you can to keep yourself and others safe.
The Central Austin Writers & Illustrators Critique Group will immediately follow in the meeting room on the third floor of BookPeople. COVID precautions apply here, too. If you can’t make this in-person critique group, please consider attending one of our other critique groups that are still on Zoom.
If you are hearing impaired and need a sign language interpreter for this event, please email Regional Advisor Samantha M Clark at firstname.lastname@example.org with your request. Please note that we will need a week’s notice.
