The speaker for our monthly meeting is Cynthia Leitich Smith, author of the young adult novel, HEARTS UNBROKEN, published by Candlewick and the best selling TANTALIZE series of YA novels. Cynthia will offer reflections on writing that’s “loosely inspired” by real lives (our own and others’), working with authenticity readers, and innovating within underrepresented literary traditions. Models the thought process of a working novelist, dealing with sensitive topics.

At the conclusion of the meeting, author Cynthia Levinson will be presented the 2018 Crystal Kite Award for The Youngest Marcher: The Story of Audrey Faye Hendricks, a Young Civil Rights Activist (illustrated by Vanessa Brantley-Newton).  The Crystal Kite Award is given to fifteen books that represent excellence in the field of children’s literature. They are peer-selected and voted on by SCBWI members from local regions. The Youngest Marcher received the most votes from the Texas/Oklahoma region during the 2018 voting period.

The monthly meeting will be immediately followed by an Open Critique Group for SCBWI members.
