Monthly Meeting: From Draft to Published–Without an Agent!

Date(s) - 07/10/2021
9:30 am - 11:00 am

Meet two authors whose picture books have been traditionally published yet they are unagented. How did they do this and how can you do it too? In this fun, interactive 60-minute presentation, Christine Van Zandt and Moni Ritchie Hadley will recount the progression of their nonfiction and fiction picture books while providing helpful hints and reminders that are applicable to writers in any category or genre with time for Q&A at the end.

Key takeaways will include the value of waiting to send the best version of your work, writing an excellent query or pitch, perseverance, critique groups, exploring routes to publication beyond signing with an agent (though signing with an agent works too!), and participating in events such as meetings (in our area there are many SCBWI Mingles), conferences, or workshops.

Both presenters live in Los Angeles, California, and are longtime SCBWI members.

Christine Van Zandt brings humor to nonfiction in her picture book, A Brief History of Underpants, (April 2021, becker&mayer! kids), has won awards for her picture-book manuscripts, and been published in Highlights and High Five magazines. Christine works as a literary editor and is the owner of Write for Success Editing Services. More info at and

Moni Ritchie Hadley’s picture book, The Star Festival (April 2021, Albert Whitman), a multigenerational tale set during the Tanabata Festival received a starred review from the School Library Journal. Moni is a former home/hospital teacher for the LAUSD, where she taught students with medical needs. She is published in Highlights magazine and has won an award and other honorable mentions for another picture-book manuscript. Learn more about Moni at

The meeting will be open at 9:30am for members to connect and share news, then the discussion will begin at 10am.
