Austin SCBWI is thrilled to continue the Austin SCBWI Scholarship for Creators of Diverse Characters for 2016 — and this year we're including ilustrators. Kidlit and teenlit writers and illustrators of all genres whose work in progress has characters (main or supporting) that are diverse in race, ethnicity, religion, sexual preference, or any other way, may apply.
The winner will receive a scholarship for the Saturday (May 14) of our 2016 Writers & Illustrators Working Conference, including all the keynotes, breakout sessions and lunch. Critiques and other extras are not included, but the Sunday (May 15) intensives will be at a discounted rate.
Submissions will be judged by the Austin SCBWI regional leadership team (Samantha Clark, P.J. Hoover and Amy Farrier) as well as by celebrity judge Stefanie Von Borstel, agent with Full Circle Literary. (Thank you, Stefanie!)
The winner will be announced at the beginning of February, before registration for the conference opens.
Applications are being accepted now. There is no application fee to enter, but the scholarship is for SCBWI members only. Only one application per person. To apply, please do the following:
Writers prepare one (1) Word document that includes the following:
• Brief 3-4 sentence paragraph about your use of diverse characters in this work in progress
• One (1) page writing sample from your manuscript formatted with standard formatting rules. This page can be the first page or a representative page from elsewhere in the manuscript.
Illustrators prepare the following:
• One (1) illustration sample from the work in progress, either a portfolio piece or picture book dummy, no more than 5MB in size
• One (1) Word document with a brief 3-4 sentence paragraph about your use of diverse characters in this piece or dummy.
Please make sure the title and genre are included on the first page of the document but NOT your name. We're focusing on the work, so judging will be anonymous.
Email your submission to Amy Reynolds at amy @ theupcorp.com (no spaces) and make sure your name, the title and genre are in the body of the email. Make the subject line: ASCBWI Diversity Scholarship Application.
Please note: We encourage all writers and illustrators to enter, no matter where they live. However, the scholarship only covers the Saturday portion of the conference, not airfare or hotel for out-of-town guests.
The application period closes Feb. 5, 2016 by 5pm Central time.
We look forward to getting your submission. Good luck!
