Over the years, Betty X. Davis, Mary Durham and Jane Peddicord represented the SCBWI Austin chapter and volunteered as judges for the Austin Family Magazine’s Young Writers Contest, which is open to fourth and fifth graders across Central Texas.
Austin Family’s publisher Kaye K. Lowak said, “Our intention was to encourage fourth and fifth graders who had an interest in writing to exhibit their skills. It has grown from only a handful of entries in the first couple of years to hundreds of entries today.”
2013 was Davis' seventh or eighth year judging and she said it is a “joy to read what the children write but it can be heartbreaking to eliminate those you know meant a great deal to the young writer.” Davis herself inspires an award given to children by Austin SCBWI, the Betty X. Davis Young Writers of Merit Award.
All entrants receive a wristband that reads “I am a writer,” and the winner in each grade receives a Kindle, a personalized plaque, and their essay and photograph appear in the Austin Family December issue.
The Austin SCBWI chapter is honored to give back to our community and to help inspire the next generation of writers!
