Announcing the 2022 Scholarship Winners

We’re thrilled to celebrate our 2022 scholarship winners!

Creators of Diverse Worlds

To encourage writers and illustrators to create diverse worlds, we launched our annual Austin SCBWI Scholarship for Creators of Diverse Worlds in 2015 and have been thrilled to watch it grow. This year, our scholarship judge was Saba Sulaiman, an agent at Talcott Notch Literary Services. The winners receive a full scholarship to our 2022 Writers & Illustrators Working Conference.

Picture books: Latino Leaders by Annabelle Estrada

Middle grade: Shiver Stories by Sabrina Shah

Young adult: Last Light by Sasha Landau

Illustration: Nancy S. Miller

Additional marginalized voices scholarship: Maw Maw’s House by Carlisha Bell

RA Scholarship

The Austin SCBWI RA Scholarship is awarded each year to a children’s book writer who has the passion and desire to pursue a career in this industry. It is designed to give the winning writer a good foundation from which they can continue to learn and grow as a children’s book author. The winners receive a full scholarship for our annual conference as well as a year’s free membership and Q&A mentorship with author and RA Samantha M Clark.

Winners: Journee Into the Caribbean Sea by Lakisha Marc-Charles, Jodie Title IX by Alanna Bass and The Thirteen Iguacas by Maria Rodriguez

Carmen Oliver On-the-Verge Annual Austin SCBWI Conference Scholarship

The Carmen Oliver On-the-Verge Annual Austin SCBWI Conference Scholarship is awarded each year to a children’s book writer who has the passion and desire to pursue a career in this industry. It is designed to give the winning writer a good foundation from which they can continue to learn and grow as a children’s book author. The winner receives a full scholarship to our annual conference as well as Q&A mentorship for a year with author Carmen Oliver.
