Congratulations to author-illustrator and Austin SCBWI member Vanessa Roeder, who just signed a deal for her next picture book, The Stack, as well as a second untitled picture book! According to the Publishers Weekly announcement, The Stack, “pitched as Audrey and Don Wood’s The Napping House meets Shel Silverstein,” is the story of Luna, “who piles the likes of a bathtub, a station wagon, and an elephant to reach something way up high…a star.” Literary agent Rebecca Sherman at Writers House brokered the two-book deal.
“Creating The Stack was one of those magical moments in writing that I’m not sure I’ll ever experience again,” Vanessa says. “I needed a mental break from another manuscript I had been revising for months, so I sat down to write a poem based on an old illustration of a girl who’d stacked up a bunch of items to reach a cookie jar. Within a matter of minutes, though, the cookies became a star and the stack items grew beyond chairs, books, and pots to a house, a whale, and even a pirate ship! I finished the manuscript in one evening, drew the sketches the next evening, and sent the dummy book to my agent. The story became my next submission. While we tweaked a few things before the submission and I’ve since made a lot of illustration revisions with my publisher, the manuscript has changed very little. For someone who agonizes over the writing process, knowing how quickly this story came together keeps me putting pen to paper.”
The Stack is scheduled for publication by Dial in spring 2022.
