The story features two clever raccoons, Roxy and Stumpy. With their dumpster-diving expertise, they never have any trouble finding a meal, until one day their luck seems to run out. The hungry raccoons then meet several animal friends who all enjoy eating prickly pear cactus…and Roxy and Stumpy have to decide if the meal is worth all the trouble.
“My inspiration for the story came from two places,” Tina says, “our back yard and our front yard! We had two raccoons visiting us regularly in the backyard because there was easy access to cat food there. And our front yard has a prickly pear cactus in the garden. We tried to harvest the prickly pears and make jam, but it didn’t go as planned. Instead, I started doing some research about animals that eat different parts of the cactus. From there, I weaved the raccoons into the story and came up with What a Prickly Pear!”
Tina’s second picture book, Being Bailey Rae, is forthcoming in 2021.
