Congratulations to Austin SCBWI member Candy Wellins, whose debut picture book Saturdays Are for Stella releases August 11th from Page Street Kids! The book, which is illustrated by Charlie Eve Ryan, has already received a glowing starred review from Kirkus.
George, the story’s protagonist, spends every Saturday with his grandmother, Stella, going to the park, or the museum, or just staying home and baking. When Stella passes away, George knows Saturdays will never be the same. But then a new addition to the family—a baby sister named Stella—shows George how to honor and even celebrate his grandmother’s memory.
The story is about “the ways families make memories together and how those memories pass down from generation to generation,” Candy says. “I lost both of my grandmothers when I was pregnant with my first child and this book is a tribute to them.”
There will be a virtual book launch party to celebrate Saturdays Are for Stella on September 5th via The Writing Barn.
