Meet Our 2020 Conference Faculty: Lynne Kelly

Meet the faculty of the 2020 Austin SCBWI Writers & Illustrators Working Conference. We’ve asked all our faculty members to answer 4 quick questions so we can get to know them better.

Lynne Kelly, Author

Lynne Kelly has always loved reading, and fell in love with children’s literature all over again when she worked as a special education teacher. Her career as a sign language interpreter has taken her everywhere from classrooms to hospitals to Alaskan cruises. She lives near Houston, Texas with her adorable dog, Holly. Song For a Whale is her second novel. Find her online at and on Twitter @lynnekelly.

What attracted you to children’s books?

I think the stories we remember most are the ones we discovered as kids. During those middle grade years we’re figuring out who we’re going to be, and books can help us navigate some of the tough things we come up against.

What’s the best part of your job?

Getting to hear from readers who’ve made a connection to the book.

What’s the most challenging part of your job?

Managing my time so I’m making enough progress on the draft.

What’s the best piece of advice you were given that helped drive your career?

Write a story you wish you could have read as a kid.
