Meet the faculty of the 2020 Austin SCBWI Writers & Illustrators Working Conference. We’ve asked all our faculty members to answer 4 quick questions so we can get to know them better.
Tiffany Liao, Editor, Henry Holt Books for Young Readers
Tiff Liao is an editor at Henry Holt Books for Young Readers. She’s had the pleasure of editing authors including New York Times-bestselling author Tomi Adeyemi, Andre Norton Award finalist Henry Lien, Jess Rothenberg, Margaret Owen, Jess Rothenberg, K.D. Halbrook, Kristin O’Donnell Tubb, and Tochi Onyebuchi, among others. She acquires young adult and middle grade fiction of all stripes, with a particular love for fantasy. A Bay Area native, Tiff now resides in Brooklyn where she continues to pine for a good avocado. She (mostly) tweets about bookish things at @tiff_liao.
What attracted you to children’s books?
I love publishing books for such a formative age and having a small role in helping to shape and expand a young reader’s worldview. I can remember books I read as a child or as a teen, line by line.
What’s the best part of your job?
I get to acquire and edit books that I would’ve loved as a child or a teenager, but also books that I wish I’d had growing up. Also, free books, of course!
What’s the most challenging part of your job?
Publishing is an industry where art meets commerce, so it’s a constant balance between the two, making sure we’re finding a way to elevate voices and discover exciting stories while also juggling the realities of the bottom line.
What’s the best piece of advice you were given that helped drive your career?
Always trust your taste (yes, even when that book you passed on becomes a runway bestseller), and always act with integrity.
