Meet Our 2020 Conference Faculty: P. J. (Tricia) Hoover

Meet the faculty of the 2020 Austin SCBWI Writers & Illustrators Working Conference. We’ve asked all our faculty members to answer 4 quick questions so we can get to know them better.

P. J. (Tricia) Hoover, Author

P. J. (Tricia) Hoover wanted to be a Jedi, but when that didn’t work out, she became an electrical engineer instead. After a fifteen year bout designing computer chips for a living, P. J. started creating worlds of her own. She’s the award-winning author of The Hidden Code, a Da Vinci Code-style young adult adventure with a kick-butt heroine, and Tut: The Story of My Immortal Life, featuring a fourteen-year-old King Tut who’s stuck in middle school. When not writing, P. J. spends time practicing kung fu, fixing things around the house, and solving Rubik’s cubes. For more information about P. J. (Tricia) Hoover, please visit her website www.pjhoover.com.

What attracted you to children’s books?

Tolkien got me into the idea of wanting to write, but it was really Harry Potter that opened up the world of kidlit for me. Then came The Lightning Thief, and I was hooked. I loved the idea of these kids having these adventures and doing big things, and I knew I wanted to write books for that market.

What’s the best part of your job?

i adore getting out to schools and meeting kids and educators and sharing my love of reading and writing with others. It’s icing on the cake of being a writer, and I wouldn’t trade it for the world!

What’s the most challenging part of your job?

There are so many various tasks on my to-do list, and it’s really hard to pull myself away from a task I LOVE doing to work on a task I know I need to work on but maybe don’t love quite as much. But hey, I’m always up for a challenge.

What’s the best piece of advice you were given that helped drive your career?

Find your community! I am so fortunate to be part of such an amazing community. From fellow creators to agents and editors, the world is a happier place because of these people. Get out there. Meet people. Find your people. And enjoy creating!
