Full and PAL members recently had a special opportunity to interact with librarians, made possible by SCBWI. Each spring the Texas Library Association (TLA) holds a conference in various cities and this year it took place in Austin. Texas SCBWI chapters have had a booth at the conference for several years, but this year SCBWI partnered with TLA Texas Authors and Illustrators Round Table to share a double-sized booth. This extra space allowed space for a signing table and a display table for members’ books. Members could also send bookmarks and swag to be distributed at the booth.
Over two days, 45 Texas SCBWI members signed books and talked with librarians about school visits (Full and PAL members from all 5 Texas chapters were invited to participate). Austin SCBWI volunteers were on hand to answer questions about SCBWI, hand out bookmarks promoting SCBWI’s Speakers Bureau and distribute Great Texas Readathon posters to librarians. Approximately 7,000 librarians attended the conference. Thank you to our member Bethany Hegedus and her The Writing Barn for lending us chairs and tables for our booth.
SCBWI also co-sponsored two panel sessions at the conference: What’s New With Texas Picture Book Authors & Illustrators and What’s New With Texas MG & YA Authors, and hosted a speed-dating meet-and-greet giving even more librarians the opportunity to meet local authors and illustrators.
The 2020 Texas Library Association conference will take place in Houston, March 24-27.
