Meet Our 2019 Conference Faculty: Mitali Perkins

Meet the faculty of the 2019 Austin SCBWI Writers & Illustrators Working Conference. We’ve asked all our faculty members to answer 4 quick questions so we can get to know them better.


Mitali Perkins, Author

Mitali Perkins’ novels for young readers include You Bring the Distant Near (National Book Award nominee), Rickshaw Girl (one of the New York Public Library’s top 100 books for children in the past 100 years), Bamboo People (ALA’s Top Ten Novels for Young Adults), and Tiger Boy (South Asia Book Award winner). She has been honored as a “Most Engaging Author” by independent booksellers and as a “Literary Light for Children” by the Boston Public Library. Mitali has lived in Bangladesh, India, England, Thailand, Mexico, Cameroon, and Ghana, studied at Stanford and U.C. Berkeley, and currently resides in the San Francisco Bay Area.

What attracted you to children’s books?

I was a feral reader as an immigrant kid, and books gave me hope that my own hero’s journey might end well.

What’s the best part of your job?

Honing the craft and loving the kids.

What’s the most challenging part of your job?

Promotion. Still feel that I suck at it, even after all of these years.

What’s the best piece of advice you were given that helped drive your career?

Write the next story.
