Kirk Benshoff, Art Director, Scholastic
Kirk Benshoff an accomplished graphic designer/art director at Scholastic managing their Nonfiction, Acorn, Branches, and Readers imprints with over twenty years of experience creating trade books, graphic novels, magazines, logos, illustrations, websites, and more. He has worked in children’s, sci fi, fantasy, commercial fiction, and comics. Some favorite projects include THE BRAIN IS KIND OF A BIG DEAL, THE ASTRONAUT WHO PAINTED THE MOON, HILDE CRACKS THE CASE, and TIME JUMPERS.
What attracted you to children’s books?
Because it’s the coolest job in the world! From a design perspective, I have so much design control from logo/title treatments, art direction, typography, and book specs. It’s amazing!
What’s the best part of your job?
The best part of my job is working with artists!
What’s the most challenging part of your job?
The most challenging part is balancing creativity with business.
What’s the best piece of advice you were given that helped drive your career?
There is no destination, it’s all a journey. Appreciate every step you take and keep pushing yourself to hit new goals.
