Lindsey Lane will be teaching a course called “Writing Children’s Literature” at Austin Community College next semester, beginning January 22, 2019, for 16 weeks. In this introductory course, students will study the principles of writing for children with an emphasis on craft, voice, genre, and form through reading, writing, and discussion of children’s literature, from picture books to young adult novels.
As the semester progresses, each student’s quality of writing and maturity of literary analysis will prepare them for academic advancement, a greater appreciation of fiction and confidence in their own creative process. Craft books for the course include What’s Your Story by Marion Dane Baur and Steering the Craft by Ursula K. Le Guin. Additionally students will read a wide selection of children’s literature that may be checked out at the library.
This class is listed under the Course Schedule for credit, but it is also available to take as a Continuing Education course. The only difference is how you register and pay for the course.
