Authors Nikki Loftin and Kat Shepherd Teach Area Youth How to Write Scary

Author and SCBWI member Nikki Loftin and author Kat Shepherd are hosting a A SPOOKY STORY CELEBRATION writing workshop geared toward families and kids ages 8 to 12. The workshop, which takes place at BookPeople on Oct. 20 at 10:30 a.m., pulls on Loftin and Shepherd’s love of writing scary stories.

Nikki Loftin lives with her Scottish photographer husband just outside Austin, Texas, surrounded by dogs, chickens, goats, and rambunctious boys. She is the author of the multiply starred-reviewed Nightingale’s Nest and The Sinister Sweetness of Splendid Academy, which Publisher’s Weekly called “mesmerizing” and Kirkus called “irresistible.” Her latest novel, Wish Girl, was published on February 24, 2015, and will be translated into Portuguese, Spanish, Italian, Japanese, Chinese, and French.

Kat Shepherd is thrilled that her writing debut is a fast-paced series that is likely to engage reluctant readers, because as an educator, she believes that reading should be a joyful experience for every kid. A former classroom teacher, Kat has also spent various points in her life working as a deli waitress, a Hollywood script reader, and a dog trainer for film and TV. She lives in Minneapolis with her husband, two dogs, and a rotating series of foster dogs. Babysitting Nightmares is her first middle grade series.

Registration for the workshop is $5. For more information, visit
