SCBWI Austin was privileged to have a wonderful team of librarians at our June monthly meeting. Filled with information about books, requirements, selection and state lists, the librarians gave us a peek into what the process looks like when selecting nominees. All of the librarians have served on numerous book list committees and were anxious to share their knowledge. Requirements differed for the various book lists.
The Spirit of Texas requires a connection to Texas. They are always excited about books that celebrate diversity and the committee is looking for books that lend themselves to programming and sharing resources. The books must receive 2 positive reviews and the committee must be able to get copies of the book. Committee members are very busy reading, reading, reading April through Oct 1st so it is important that a book be submitted early to make the list. There are other requirements as well.
The Texas Bluebonnet Award also has criteria for eligible nominees. Selections are solicited from librarians, teachers, parents, students and other interested persons. A new list is released every year at the Texas Book Festival in November. Both fiction and nonfiction books are represented. For more information visit www.txla.org/TBA
The librarians are excited to get to know all of our wonderful authors in Texas. They want to bring great reads to children and find books that will resonate with every reader.
Thank you to all the librarians for sharing their time, knowledge and experience with us on Saturday. To read about all of the Texas Book Lists, check out www.txla.org
