February 2018 Monthly Meeting

IT IS NEVER TOO LATE TO BE
WHAT YOU MIGHT HAVE BEEN.

GEORGE ELIOT

The topic of our February SCBWI meeting led by Melissa Buron, MAB Media, was Learning, Fear and Creativity: How to use Science to Improve Your Creative Life. Melissa helped us understand how our mindset helps us to overcome our fears, challenges and obstacles.

Smart Goals, is a technique that is used to help us focus on our goals.
S=Specific or Significant,
M= Measurable or Meaningful
A= Attainable or Action-oriented
R= Relevant or Rewarding
T= Time-bound or Trackable

Smart Goals is a great way to produce if used with a specific plan, for example it is not helpful to just say, “I want to be an Author”, instead “On Monday I will write for 45 minutes while the kids are at soccer.” Melissa explained that excellence is always on the other side of many things like pain, boredom, hard-work and self-doubt. A formula she shared with us is GRIT=EFFORT. It is important to be mindful of the traps that our mind uses to slip back to the easy stuff!

Three ideas we were left with from Melissa’s informative talk were:
1) It is within our power to direct our own learning. (Not always fun)
2) Our mind always seeks the easiest route. It will fight against learning something new.
3) Creativity is best fostered through the act of creation.

Thank you, Melissa, for your time, for helping us with new tools and reminding us to produce, produce, produce!
