Meet the faculty of the 2018 Austin SCBWI Writers & Illustrators Working Conference. We’ve asked all our faculty members to answer 4 quick questions so we can get to know them better.
Thomas Jung, Illustrator
Thomas Jung is a graduate of The Art Center College of Design. He is a video game artist and educator who has contributed to such games as The World of WarCraft, the Oddworld series of games, and DC Universe Online. He has taught computer graphics and digital image making at the college level for the last fifteen years.
What attracted you to children’s books?
That’s where the exciting stories live–the first times, the intensity of emotion, the characters who speak to both who you are and who you hope to become. I can’t think of a better job than writing for children and young adults.
What’s the best part of your job?
Though not published in children’s books (yet!) I have contributed to many games that have touched the lives of people I’ve gotten to know and become friends with. I look forward to enjoying similar connections with the people who will someday read my books.
What’s the most challenging part of your job?
Cutting away the distractions of life and finding solid blocks of time to work.
What’s the best piece of advice you were given that helped drive your career?
You’re always five years away from being as good as you’d like to be. Don’t give up.
Come see Thomas at the 2018 Austin SCBWI conference, April 28-29, 2018
