Meet the faculty of the 2018 Austin SCBWI Writers & Illustrators Working Conference. We’ve asked all our faculty members to answer 4 quick questions so we can get to know them better.
Marcia Wernick, Agent, Wernick & Pratt Agency
Marcia Wernick is a partner and literary agent at Wernick & Pratt Agency, LLC. She began her career more than 25 years ago working in subsidiary rights and still attends the Bologna Children’s Book Fair. The agency represents authors and illustrators on a wide range of children’s books spanning all age groups and genres. Marcia works with both writers and illustrators, from picture book authors and/or illustrators through young adult writers. Her clients range from emerging talent to award winners and include Zebo Ludvicek, Alexandra Boiger, and Ed Masessa, as well as Mo Willems, Bryan Collier, and Diane Stanley.
What attracted you to children’s books?
I was one of those lucky fools who fell into it by happenstance and it grew into a love match.
What’s the best part of your job?
Seeing my clients books out there getting embraced by readers and reviewers.
What’s the most challenging part of your job?
Having to deliver bad news to a client.
What’s the best piece of advice you were given that helped drive your career?
I was speaking with an editor about a bestselling book she had passed on. She said it probably wouldn’t have been a bestseller if she had acquired it because she didn’t see it that way. I’ve always had gut reactions to the business and hearing her story confirmed that it was a valid way to do business.
Come see Marcia at the 2018 Austin SCBWI conference, April 28-29, 2018
