Meet the faculty of the 2017 Austin SCBWI Writers & Illustrators Working Conference. We’ve asked all our faculty members to answer 4 quick questions so we can get to know them better.

Shelley Ann Jackson, Author, Illustrator

Shelley Ann Jackson is the author/illustrator of the award-winning Little Lions, Bull Baiters & Hunting Hounds, and several other picture books. She holds MFA degrees in Illustration from the School of Visual Arts, and in Writing for Children and Young Adults from Vermont College of Fine Arts. She teaches illustration and design at Texas State University, and writing for children at St Edward’s University. Shelley is a member of the Girllustrators and the Texas Sweethearts and Scoundrels.

What attracted you to children’s books?

Beautiful art, heartfelt relationships, and the freedom to experiment and play with all kinds of stories.

What’s the best part of your job?

Writing or illustrating, being in the creative zone—there’s no feeling like it!

What’s the most challenging part of your job?

Finding solid blocks of time to devote to creating.

What’s the best piece of advice you were given that helped drive your career?

In 1994, as Jan Brett autographed a book to me at a signing, I announced that I wanted to do what she does. Her advice: join SCBWI. I signed up immediately and it has shaped the course of my career!
