2017 Conference Faculty: Linda Camacho

Meet the faculty of the 2017 Austin SCBWI Writers & Illustrators Working Conference. We’ve asked all our faculty members to answer 4 quick questions so we can get to know them better.

Linda Camacho, Agent, Prospect Agency

Linda Camacho joined Prospect Agency in 2015 after a decade in publishing. After graduating from Cornell University, Linda interned at Simon & Schuster and Writers House literary agency, and worked at Penguin and Random House before making the leap to agenting. She also has an MFA in children’s writing from the Vermont College of Fine Arts.
She’s seeking graphic narratives, MG, YA, and adult fiction across all genres (particularly romance/women’s fiction and upmarket), along with select picture book writers. Diversity of all types welcome (ethnicity, disability, sexuality, etc.).

What attracted you to children’s books?

I used to work in adult publishing and oddly, hadn’t considered working in children’s until I saw an opening for it. Once I made the switch, the nostalgia I have for children’s books made me love working with them all the more fun.

What’s the best part of your job?

The best part is making that phone call to a client when they get a publishing offer. You really do feel like a fairy godmother of sorts!

What’s the most challenging part of your job?

The most challenging part of my job is keeping up with all the new submissions coming in. Reading through them and client work (which comes first) can certainly make for an interesting juggling act!

What’s the best piece of advice you were given that helped drive your career?

Do this for love, not money. Then you’ll feel like you’ve never worked a day in your life!
