Each year, an Austin SCBWI illustrator mentor chooses a portfolios from the Portfolio Showcase at our annual conference as someone they feel they'd like to help guide over the next year. Our 2016 mentor, illustrator Marsha Riti, weighs in below on her choice for the winner of our 2016 Emerging Voice Illustrator Mentor Award.
I am so excited to announce this year’s 2016 mentee, Kristin Wauson. The mentorship is awarded annually by the mentor at the Austin SCBWI regional conference, and seeks to guide the recipient in establishing their career.
Kristin Wauson is a 2005 graduate of The University of Texas at Austin, where she studied Advertising and completed the Texas Creative Sequence. She is naturally a creative person and has drawn her entire life. She especially enjoys illustration, lettering, and brand identity, but also has skills in writing, editing, photography and web design.
A member of the SCBWI, Kristin has always loved children's picture books and hopes to illustrate and perhaps even write her own one day.
She lives in Dripping Springs, just outside of Austin, Texas, with her husband, six-year-old stepson, new baby boy, and a golden retriever named Charlie. She is also a 200-hour certified yoga instructor. When she is not drawing, designing, or making silly faces at the baby, you'll probably find her cooking, practicing yoga, or playing outside.
Kristin and I will have a year-long mentorship together. We will be working on portfolio, marketing, and career guidance through a series of meetings and correspondence.
I chose Kristin for the mentorship because she has an open mind and is true to her heart.
