Meet the faculty of the 2015 Austin SCBWI Writers & Illustrators Working Conference. We've asked all our faculty members to answer 4 quick questions so we can get to know them better.
Next in the series is Jo Whittemore.
Jo Whittemore is the author of the tween humor novels Front Page Face-Off, Odd Girl In, D is for Drama, and the upcoming Colonial Madness and Confidentially Yours series. She also penned The Silverskin Legacy fantasy trilogy. Jo is a member of the SCBWI (Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators) and The Texas Sweethearts & Scoundrels. When she isn't writing, Jo spends her time with family and friends in Austin, dreaming of the day she can afford a chocolate house where she will live with the Tenth Doctor.
What attracted you to children’s books?
The innocence and hope in children. It means anything is possible when you write for them!
What’s the best part of your job?
Making people laugh. I love knowing my words can cheer others.
What’s the most challenging part of your job?
Marketing my own books. It feels arrogant to say, “Read my work! I’m hilarious!”
What’s the best piece of advice you were given that helped drive your career?
Always be open to new ideas. After my fantasy trilogy, my agent was the one who encouraged me to write humor. It wasn’t even something I’d considered, and now I’m so grateful I did!
Come see Jo at the 2015 Austin SCBWI conference, March 7-8.
