August Monthly Meeting

Don & Chris - August monthly meeting

Don Tate and Chris Barton

For our August monthly meeting, we had the pleasure to hear from author/illustrator Don Tate and author Chris Barton. They shared their collaborative history which brought to life the picture book biographies The Amazing Age of John Roy Lynch and Whoosh! Lonnie Johnson's Super-Soaking Stream of Inventions.

The chance for an author and illustrator to collaborate so much on a picture book is rare. Having that kind of opportunity helped Don and Chris create stronger stories. Through the process, they learned from each other, pushed their creativity to new heights, and formed a lasting friendship to boot.

Chirs shared a few tips for anyone who wants to collaborate with someone or form a critique partnership. A few highlights from his list include: establish trust and expectations, be diplomatic and respectful, ask questions rather than prescribe solutions, be generous, and diversity makes you a better team.

Afterward, we were honored to witness Don receive his SCBWI Crystal Kite Award for his book Poet. Congratulations Don!

Thank you, Don and Chris for sharing your story. It was inspiring!
